In its first encounter this year, the anti-terrorism
squad (ATS) intercepted and killed two alleged Bangladeshi terrorists in Kashimira
near Mira Road at about 9.15 pm on Tuesday. The men were carrying firearms,
fake currency of Rs 6 lakh and two kg of a powder, which was subsequently
tested and found to be RDX.
"We had information that the delivery
of a revolver and pistol had taken place there. It was a joint operation of
ATS teams from Pune and Mumbai,'' said Param Bir Singh, joint commissioner
of police. The ATS has also seized a passport from the encounter site.
"The identity of the killed suspects
has been established as Mohammed Ali and Babu. The duo had come from Bangladesh
only last week. Teams of the bomb detection and disposal squad are also reaching
the spot,'' said an ATS officer, refusing to give details of the encounter
site.
He said that the two persons sustained bullet
injuries during the exchange of fire near the Pleasant Park hotel. "Our
priority was to save their lives, but unfortunately it was too late. They
were rushed to Bhagwati Hospital, Borivli, and declared dead on admission,''
said the officer.
Asked whether the duo had any links with Faheem
Ansari, recently caught by the UP STF, the officers said they were verifying
the details. Their affiliation with terror outfit HuJI is also being ascertained.
Locals claimed to have seen police vans roaming
in the area hours before the alleged shootout took place.
