Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's nephew, Sajid Wagle, has been targeting cable operators in several areas of south Mumbai including, Mohammed Ali Road, Null Bazar and Dongri.

Popularly known as Bhanja, Wagle (38) has a group of boys working for him who go about threatening cable operators to pay hafta to the don's nephew, who himself owns a cable and internet service agency.

Son of a technical head clerk in the Merchant Navy, Bhanja is the second among four siblings. A Std-VI dropout from Rosary High School, Wagle, stepped into the world of crime in 1999 when he was first arrested in connection with an extortion case.

"He is trying to use the name of his uncle (Dawood) to threaten cable operators and internet service providers. Bhanja owns Nawaz Cable and Internet at Fatima Manzil in Dongri and has been trying to expand his business, by scaring other operators, dropping Dawood's name,'' said crime branch chief Rakesh Maria.

Bhanja started his cable business a few years ago and now, he has around 1,000 consumers.

"His boys go and disconnect the cable connection provided by other operators and then offer to plug in their own link. They have been doing this since Wagle started his business but people have never protested against it fearing Dawood's connection. We have arrested him and assure complete protection to the complainants against Wagle,'' added Maria.

In May 2004, Bhanja was arrested again, this time, in connection with an assault case, in which he and his accomplices beat up a businessman.

Though Bhanja has never met his uncle in the past 25 years, he proudly uses his "good will''.

In an attempt to expand his business, he threatened two cable operators, asking them to leave the area or they would have to pay Rs one lakh each as hafta to him.

"The complainants had been running from pillar to post for the past one-and-ahalf months but finally approached us and lodged a complaint. The crime branch has provided them protection and we are questioning Wagle about how many cable operators pay him hafta,'' Maria said. "He is also involved in settling disputes.''

Bhanja's younger brother, Sameer, who was arrested by the Byculla police in February 2006 in a case of wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation, stays separately with his wife. Bhanja's two sisters, Nazmia and Safeena, both married, live with their families in south Mumbai.

His mother, Shahid who was Dawood's elder sister, passed away last year.
