Introduction: After Afsar Khan was arrested, his supporters caused traffic to stall for two hours

Tension prevailed at the heart of Hyderabad on Saturday when an MLA intimidated officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation by opening fire in broad daylight.

Majlis-a-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Afsar Khan fired three rounds in the air and threatened to "shoot" GHMC staffers if they did not desist from demolishing an under construction building. The structure is being developed by a MIM sympathiser.

Though Khan was arrested, angry MIM activists stormed the Abids police station and demanded his immediate release. The protesters brought traffic to a halt on the busy junction for more than two hours and even threatened to besiege the police station.

However, city police commissioner B Prasada Rao made it clear he would not be released as the MLA had threatened public servants on duty. Following the incident, special police were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control.

GHMC official G Satyanarayana Rao explained that the building was being constructed in violation of the civic body's approved plans. "Our staff went to demolish the building as per law," he said, complaining that the MLA had used abusive language with officials of the corporation. Following the incident, GHMC staff threatened to boycott duties till stringent action was initiated against Khan. Khan, however, maintained he had opened fire in self-defence.

Last year, Khan and his aides had assaulted a doctor at the Niloufer government children's hospital. Prior to that, he and his fellow party MLAs had attacked controversial novelist Taslima Nasrin at a Press Club.
