At a time when the Congress-NCP is taking
on the Shiv Sena for its "Mumbai for Marathis" stand, it's clear
that its own ministers are pushing the Marathi agenda.
The Chief Minister Ashok Chavan came under sharp criticism from NCP leader
and deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal for watering down a cabinet decision
on giving new taxi permits to only those who read, speak and write, Marathi.
The cabinet had later changed this to a working knowledge of Marathi and any
other local language.
Bhujbal also drew support from Congress leaders like Narayan Rane and Patangrao
Kadam, rivals to the Chief Minister's chair.
