When Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha
Sushma Swaraj entered the House on Thursday afternoon, several BJP members
thumped their desk. Leaders made a beeline to congratulate her on the Supreme
Court quashing the appointment of CVC PJ Thomas.
The SC verdict came as a shot in the arm for
Swaraj, who had opposed the appointment of Thomas to the post and stood her
ground despite Government claims that information about pending charge sheet
against Thomas was not circulated before the committee.
It was only after Swaraj 'threatened' to file
an affidavit before the SC that Home Minister P Chidambaram had finally admitted
that the matter was discussed in the committee.
Party sources said senior BJP leader LK Advani
and others complimented her for the efforts she undertook to take the matter
to the logical end. Even BJP chief Nitin Gadkari said, "Sushmaji had
raised this issue before the PM but they did not listen to her. If the government
had considered it then they wouldn't have to face the quashing of the appointment."
Curiously, Sushma kept a low profile throughout
the day and did not speak much on the issue and just said, "The dignity
of the office of CVC has been restored."
