Uncovering what they said was a Lashkar-e-Toiba plot to strike Delhi, police on Thursday arrested a man from Jharkhand, taking to three the number of those apprehended. A search is on for a fourth man said to be involved in the terror plot.
Tauseef Ahmad Pir (22), cousin of main accused Ahtesham Malik (24) who underwent arms training in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, was picked up from Hazaribagh on Wednesday night and placed under arrest on Thursday.
He was taken to New Delhi after a court in Hazaribagh granted transit remand. “We handed him over to Delhi Police after the court ruling,” Hazaribagh SP Pankaj Kamboj said.
Another person wanted in the case, Muzamil Amin Dar, remains at large.
In New Delhi, DCP (Special Cell) Arun Kampani said Tauseef, a resident of Sopore, was to go to Pakistan for training and was aware of Ahtesham’s plans to strike the Capital.
Police said surveillance of Dar’s phone suggested that till two weeks ago, he had been in active touch with Ahtesham but had dropped off the radar thereafter.
“It appears that even Ahtesham and Tauseef do not know the whereabouts of Dar. They think that he has been arrested in the Valley. It looks as if he knew about police closing in on the others,” an officer said.
In Hazaribagh, a police officer who questioned Tauseef said: “Apart from telling us that he knew Ahtesham was associated with LeT, he told us that his parents sent him to his aunt in Hazaribagh to study after he fell in love with a girl in Sopore.”
