Days after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attracted the ire of the judiciary for her remarks, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha on Sunday slammed the UPA saying that it was manipulating judiciary for political reasons.

Sinha charged the Congress-led UPA of manipulating the judiciary where it can “extract judgments”. “This government is managing the judiciary,” he alleged, but stressed that he was not repeating Mamata’s words.

Claiming that some BJP chief ministers have expressed their concerns at the Centre’s alleged “managing of judiciary”, he said, that “a judge is appointed on probation basis for three to six months and only when the government is convinced that he is favourable, his appointment is confirmed”. “Who would have imagined this innovative way of managing the judiciary but this government is doing it,” Sinha said, demanding the country “must have a National Judicial Commission which will take away this kind of discretion from the Centre and put it in the hands of a neutral body”.

Sinha also asserted that economic growth in the states ruled by the BJP or the NDA have been truly inclusive in contrast to the mere sloganeering of inclusive growth of the Congress-led regimes in states as well as the Centre. “For the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, the slogan of inclusive growth has meant inclusive corruption, crony capitalism, unbridled inflation and assault on federal structure by excessive centralisation. But the level and pattern of economic growth in the BJP-ruled states have been inclusive,” he said while briefing reporters regarding the BJP chief ministers’ convention held here on Saturday.

He said that while the BJP-ruled states were revenue surplus with fiscal deficit less than three per cent, the Central government had been unable to observe prudent fiscal management. He added that the BJP-ruled states have not only managed to improve the lot of farmers, the SC/STs but also improved infrastructure to benefit everyone.
