Nine live pipe bombs were seized from a lodge in Hindpiri area of Ranchi by the state police on Monday evening. The police also found 19 detonators, 25 gelatin sticks and two clocks fitted to the bombs, Inspector General of Police (Zonal) M S Bhatia said. Each bomb consisted of three pipe elbows, he said.

Jharkhand Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar said that the initial investigation suggested that similar timer devices were used in the October 27 Patna blasts.

The seizures were made from a room in a lodge which was rented out to a student — police gave his name as Mujibul Ansari and said he is absconding — on a monthly basis. Hyder Ali, who investigating agencies say is an Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative and a suspect in the Patna blasts, reportedly visited the lodge.

"We have to assume that there is an Indian Mujahideen connection to this. A task force was formed with personnel from the local police, CID and Special Branch. They have been working on certain leads for the last two days," said Additional Director General of Police S N Pradhan, spokesperson for the state police.

The National Investigation Agency was not present during the raid, but the DGP said they would "extend all cooperation to the NIA and share the information with them". The bombs were taken to Morabadi maidan in the city for defusing.

Multiple suspects in the Patna blasts have come to be associated with Ranchi. The NIA had on October 30 arrested a resident of Doranda's Mani Tola, Uzair Ahmad, while Imitiaz Ansari, who was arrested in connection with the Patna blasts, also belongs to Ranchi.

The prime suspect in the blasts, Ainul alias Tarique, who died at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences hospital in Patna on October 31, hailed from the Jharkhand capital as well.

Police had earlier claimed that Indian Mujahideen had set up a 'Ranchi module' and had sent a proposal to Jharkhand government urging them to sanction the setting up an anti-terrorist squad to contain terror acts.
