Former cricket writer and “historian” Ramachandra Guha expressed grave concerns over the Public Broadcaster Doordarshan showing live the Vijay Dasami speech of RSS Sanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat from Nagpur today. According to Mr. Guha and Mr. Vardarajan formerly of the Hindu, this would set the “wrong precedent” on so called “sectarian” programming on the public broadcaster.

One wonders when was the last time Mr. Guha and Mr. Varadarajan watched anything on Doordarshan to vet its programming by their “secular” doublestandards.

Here is a mere sample of “sectarian” and “political” programs Doordarshan telecast in the past without much of a squeal from messrs Guha and Varadarajan:

It is one thing to argue against the need for a public broadcaster and to make the case for privatization of Prasar Bharathi. But that is not the argument one hears  from Mr. Guha or Mr. Varadarajan. What we instead are hearing is an argument for selective outrage where one kind of programming is ignored and another kind is made out to be the end of civilization as we know it.

The reality is the state of programming on Doordarshan the way it is today is the legacy of the Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi era. It is time either Prasar Bharathi is privatized or given complete functional autonomy along the lines of the BBC. In the absence of either to selectively outrage over the programming choices made by Doordarshan is sheer hypocrisy and intellectual dishonesty.
