Greenpeace India Society, one of the largest Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) operating in India lost its registration as a society on Friday. This means that all activities of the NGO in the country have come to a grinding halt, according to a Greenpeace spokesperson.

U Shanmugasundaram, District Registrar, Chennai, in his order dated November 4, 2015, said that fraudulent financial dealings committed by the society have been detected by the officials of the registration department. According to the District Registrar, Greenpeace India Society falsified its accounts to the tune of `13.29 crore during the period 2004 to 2014. Though the society received  crores of Rupees as funds from foreign countries, it did not furnish the original amount in the statement submitted to the Registrar of Societies.

The NGO has also not filed its annual reports during 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2009 -10 which is a violation of Rule 22 of the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Rule 1978. “On inspection by the Registrar, a series of irregularities and violations of the rules had been noticed.

On the basis of the findings in that enquiry, a show cause notice dated June 16, 2015 had been issued calling for an explanation as to why the registration should not be cancelled,” said the District Registrar.

The order further said that in spite of repeated requests from the office of the Registrar, Greenpeace India Society stonewalled all efforts to probe the dealings and furnish the details. “The Greenpeace society has contravened provisions of all laws dealing with registration of societies warranting the Registrar to cancel the registration of the society,” said U Shanmugasundaram in his seven-page order.

“The Registrar of Societies is clearly acting under the directions of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in Delhi, which has been trying to shut Greenpeace India down for over a year now. The MHA’s clumsy tactics to suppress free speech and dissenting voices are turning into a major national and international embarrassment for this Government,” said Vinuta Gopal, Interim Executive Director of Greenpeace India.

“We received a letter on Friday morning from the Registrar of Societies, informing us about the cancellation of our registration as a society. No reason has been given for the cancellation,” H Merchant, Greenpeace’s spokesperson in Chennai told The Pioneer.

Merchant said no explanation has been given by the Registrar of Societies for cancelling the registration. “We had been served with a show cause notice in June 2015 by the MHA. The MHA had levelled many accusations against us to which we responded in detail. Ours is a transparent organisation and we are open for scrutiny. The Greenpeace website has listed all our activities in India,” said Merchant.

According to Merchant, the NGO is engaged in revolutionising the solar power sector of the country. “Our current mission is to make solar power available to all the villages in the country. But with the cancellation of registration, our activities will come to an end,” said Merchant.
