In a dramatic turn of events, as many as 2 Lac of the total 2.22 Lac BPL (below poverty line) minority students in the northern hill state Uttarakhand have completely DISAPPEARED.

As many as 2.22L BPL minority students in Uttarakhand were being provided with scholarships meant for the children from the minority communities with BPL status. It was happening when Congress was in power and a large number of such fake records were created all over the state.

The scheme was meant to be of great assistance for poor students from the minority community from class 1 to 10. BUT, was the Congress state government in the state using this scheme as a mechanism to divert money to hundreds of Madrassas? In a way, yes!

After the Narendra Modi government began emphasizing that the records for all such schemes be digitized, Madrassas in Uttarakhand could no longer continue getting BPL scholarships for students who DID NOT EXIST. Sample this – During the FY 2014-15, there were 2, 21,800 minority BPL students enrolled for the scholarship scheme. In 2016-17, the number dropped to 26,394, says a TOI report. The maximum number of disappearances (83,140) has been reported from Haridwar.

What happened to about 2Lac minority students whom the Congress state government in Uttarakhand had registered for the scholarship scheme for the poorest of poor?

Had the minority welfare dept of Uttarakhand not initiated digitization of records for the scholarship schemes, the government would have continued doling out money to Madrassas where non-existing students were enrolled.

The government spent 14.50 Cr on the scheme in 2014-15.
