There are various journalists who in recent past have tried to create unrest through spreading rumors. Some rumors had the potential to create communal violence and riots, and in such cases police had to clarify that the posts are not true.

HMP brings to you list of ten journalists who have blatantly spread malicious news, fake news, communal hatred that could have lead to their arrest.

1) Sagarika Ghose/Rajdeep Sardesai

This ‘Bunty-Bubbly of journalism’ is most infamous for spreading fake and communal news.

Woman 'gang raped for eating beef'

Sagarika posted an 8 month old fake news to spread communal hatred. Haryana police had to debunk the beef angle just a day later, i.e., on 13 September 2016. Sagarika chose not to delete and waited for violence to happen.

Could be prosecuted under: IPC Section 120 (criminal conspiracy), 153A (Provocation for riots),295A (insult to religion) & 505 (statement conducting to public mischief)

2) Pallavi Ghosh

Even when her lie got caught, she shamelessly acted as if UP Police endorsed ‘abuse’ directed towards her.

3) Raghu Ram of AAP

Barun Kashyap, a creative director, who had claimed to be threatened by some gau-rakshaks (cow protectors) after they mistook his bag as one made of cow leather, was eventually jailed for spreading this fake news.

But his equal partner in crime AAP supporter Raghu Ram was spared.

Raghu Ram has also been alleged of giving rape threats to contestants’ sisters and mothers on his reality show “Roadies”.

4) Quint Journo Poonam Agarwal

Spreading fake news about someone’s death/rape is a different thing, but she had actually abetted suicide of Lance Naik Roy Matthew by publishing sensitive information about him from the interview taken without his cognisance, due to reasons beyond our grasp.

She was charged under much dilute ‘Official Secrets Act’ rather than culpable homicide, and still she shamelessly kept blaming the government for harassing her.

5) Faye D’souza

List of malicious lies spread by her to create panic in public is so long (GST on sanitary pads, Ryan school murder, FDRI bill) that she is called as ‘Arvind Kejriwal of journalism’. Not a single instance can be found where she has apologized for her lies or issued clarification, which suggests that all she did was intentional.

Could be prosecuted under: IPC Section 418 (intentional cheating), 425(mischief), 505

6) Nikhil Wagle

No MSM covered this incident that Nikhil Wagle was booked by police for publicly abusing Bramhins.

Unfortunately, Maharashtra Govt. appears to let him off as no further action was taken against him.

7) Shivam Vij

The piece by Deputy Editor of Huffington Post India, Shivam Vij, claimed that “there have already been 33 deaths due to demonetisation in 6 days”. In a detailed article in Opindia, journalist Rupa Subramanya busted his claims one by one.

Could be prosecuted under: 353 (deter public servants from doing their duty), 425 & 505

8) Rana Ayyub

On incident of rape of a Nun in West Bengal in 2015, Rana Ayyub in her article accused RSS volunteers, whereas later, it was proved that actual culprits were Bangladeshi Muslims. When The Postcard chief has been accused of the same crime (blaming Muslims for injury of Jain monk), Rana Ayyub shouldn’t have gone scot free.

Could be prosecuted under: IPC Section 153A, 295A & 505 and of course 120A (criminal conspiracy under which Postcard chief was jailed)

9) Ram Guha

When Left Wing Journalist Gauri Lankesh was killed, Ram Guha made unsubstantiated accusations that RSS is behind that murder. When local BJP sent him a defamation notice, he tried to play victim card.

Could be prosecuted under: IPC Section 153A, 295A & 505 and of course 120A (again same sections under which Postcard chief was jailed coincidentally in same state Karnataka)

10) Shekhar Gupta for Fake Coup Story

Shekhar Gupta, without any proof, openly accused Indian Army of attempting to throw democratically elected Government via alleged coup. In any other democracy he would have been prosecuted and jailed for spreading mistrust among masses about the Army.

Could be prosecuted under: IPC Section 131 (abetting mutiny), 425, 504(intent to provoke breach of peace), 505

11) Ravish Kumar

Though NDTV India only received token ban for it’s reporting which revealed sensitive details to Pathankot attack terrorists, it’s editor deserved much more punishment for jeopardising India’s security, considering the severity of punishment received by The Postcard editor for an alleged fake news.

Could be prosecuted under: IPC Section 120, 121(helping foreign enemy getting footing ), 504, 505

All media houses shamelessly spread fake news against BJP MLA that he broke leg of horse ‘Shaktimaan’, when horse had lost it due to an accident.

13) Sanjiv Bhatt

Though he’s not a journalist, but he has been an equal competition to them when it comes to spreading propaganda.

No one propagates fake news, communal hatred and Anti-india propaganda as the disgraced former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt. He left no opportunity to peddle anti-India narrative as even when a Kashmiri kid was playing with Armed forces or martyrdom of Lt. Fayaz.

15) Prateek Sinha

Prateek Sinha had spread fake news that a viral pro-Pak sloganeering video in Bihar is doctored. Bihar DGP personally had to issue clarification that ‘fact check’ of Prateek Sinha is malicious because the video was real. In past too, Prateek Sinha had spread fake news related to Yeddyurappa(with his morphed pic), Major Gaurva Arya to malign them.
