People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has over the years proved that there is absolutely nothing ethical about its operations and operates in the country with a clear bias and vested interests. PETA which is supposed to be the ‘protectors’ of the animals has emerged as a major detriment to the welfare of the animals. In a heart-wrenching account by Ajit Datta, the beloved elephant Lakshmi has been taken from Puducherry’s Manakular Vinayagam temple by PETA into an enclosure where Lakshmi is now battling for her life.

Since 1997, Lakshmi found a permanent home at the Manakular Vinayagam temple and quickly became a household name. It was customary for any visitor to visit the temple and see Lakshmi in all her glory who used to bless the devotees by lifting her trunk and blessing them softly on their head. Lakshmi is a very intelligent and social being and she would bless the devotees only once and there was no fooling her.v

Thread on Lakshmi the elephant

Lakshmi, the temple elephant, came to Pondicherry in 1997, a year after I was born. She lived down the road from us. The Manakular Vinayagam temple, barely a few hundred metres from home, is where she spent the day.

Lakshmi became a social animal as localities used to shower her with bananas, biscuits and tonnes of love. Times changed, people left but Lakshmi remained a constant and there were no signs that the mahout was unhappy with her life.

In a stealth operation, the forest department acting at the behest of PETA, took away Lakshmi to an enclosure under the pretext of a leg injury and it is believed that PETA plans to release Lakshmi into the wild at a later stage.

Even a toddler knows that a domesticated animal cannot survive in the wild. This is precisely the reason why pet dogs and cats abandoned by their owners are immediately put up for adoption and not released in the wild.

Instead of treating Lakshmi’s injury inside the temple’s complex, the forest department took her to Agricultural Science Center in the forest area. Uprooting an animal from her home isn’t ‘rescue’ and PETA is well aware of this but there are vested interests at play here.

The enclosure where Lakshmi has been taken to is situated 8 KM away from the temple and PETA thought it is prudent to make her walk on the tar roads in the searing heat of June at a time when she already has an injury on the leg. Ironically, PETA took away Lakshmi on the grounds of treating her foot injury. Consulting editor at TFIPOST, Ajit Datta, wrote about the ordeal faced by the elephant at the hands of the PETA.

This thread is about the fraud that these shameless thugs are committing. It's high time that the Goverment of India steps in and bans PETA.

Since 1997, Lakhmi has been an integral part of our lives in Pondicherry. PETA doesn't care about her, their interests lie elsewhere.

Things became worse after Lakshmi reached the enclosure as there was no food or water for hours and no shed to protect her with fishnets being used as a fence. She faced a life-threatening incident on her first day at the enclosure when a snake came precariously close to Lakshmi and she was saved in the nick of time.

Uprooting Lakshmi from her home and moving her to a place where she is no more the centre of attraction took a toll on her as she barely ate and didn’t sleep for 5 nights. In the past 20 days, Lakshmi’s health has massively deteriorated thanks to PETA’s mistreatment and shockingly, despite her deteriorating health, PETA is planning to release Lakshmi into the wild.

The role of animal activist and BJP MP Maneka Gandhi is noteworthy in the entire incident. PETA shot off a letter to Gandhi of how Lakshmi was mistreated at the temple with the MP buying PETA’s false accusations. Gandhi then sent a letter to the local authorities with the forest department then wasting no time to take away Lakshmi. It is important to note that the decision to move Lakshmi away happened without due consultation from the Animal Husbandry Department and veterinarians.

“We have received information that PETA is behind this. First they would remove the elephant from the temple, claiming to provide medication. Then they will permanently leave the elephant to the forest. This is what happened in Thiruparankundram as well. There is a massive conspiracy to remove elephants from temples across South India,” said Puducherry BJP functionary PS Ganeshan.

A Mahout at a Temple in Kerala asks his Elephant permission to go home. Just see the body language, bonding & affection. Amazing & so beautiful to watch.

There is a clear campaign by PETA to remove elephants from South Indian temples as they continue to target the Hindu culture. The question is who is PETA to decide whether an animal needs to be taken away? When was the last time did PETA save cows from being slaughtered? The same PETA was vociferous in demanding a ban on Jallikattu but doesn’t do anything when cows are being slaughtered just for the sake of a few taste buds?

PETA has never really cared for animals as in October 2019, PETA had been accused putting healthy animals to sleep by euthanizing them on a massive scale.

According to reports, PETA puts to death up to 97.4 percent of the animals in its care in any given year, including those it accepts from members of the public who expect the organisation to provide these helpless animals a new home. The animal rights group has put down shockingly 36,000 animals in the last 20 years. PETA’s pro-killing attitude is part of its core and it should shock any animal lover.

The question arises, why does PETA kill cats and dogs by thousands instead of finding them homes, the reason is simple, PETA does not believe in pet ownership. In PETA’s twisted mind, it’s more humane to just euthanize the animals than for hypothetical harm to befall them in the future.

In November 2014, PETA employees had allegedly taken a family’s Chihuahua without cause in broad daylight from the family’s home in Virginia, USA. A surveillance video showed a van branded with the PETA logo pull up in the driveway followed by a worker seizing the dog and driving off. The dog’s owner had said that PETA employees later returned to his home with a fruit basket and news that the dog had been killed. The little girl, whose chihuahua Maya was killed by PETA had been inconsolable at that time.

PETA’s nefarious activities call for urgent intervention from the Central government as there are many skeletons in PETA’s closet. However, any efforts to punish PETA will be futile as long as people like Maneka Gandhi with their selective activism tacitly aid the organisation’s activities.
